About the Program
The Occidental Petroleum Corporation Geismar Plant is located in Geismar, Louisiana, and manufactures raw materials used to make refrigerants. The team manages the land surrounding the plant to provide habitat for wildlife. The site features over 220 acres of grassland habitat and 1,800 acres of forest habitat. Team members manage the land to increase biodiversity, improve ecosystem health, eradicate invasive species and protect native species from predators.

Practices and Impacts
  • In 2006, the team installed 44 nest boxes to protect songbirds from predatory impact and to increase cavity nesting birds. Employees monitor boxes weekly during nesting season using visual observation, photographs and the Geismar Wildlife Management Association (GWMA) nest box monitoring protocol.
  • The team manages 400 acres of land to control invasive feral hogs, improve water quality, protect native species in the habitat and prevent habitat destruction, soil erosion and agricultural damage. Employees set live traps, baited with fermented corn, to attract and eradicate the on-site hog population by relocation or humanely dispatching the hogs and donating the meat. The team actively monitors feral hogs using trail cameras.
  • In 2014, bat boxes were installed on-site by the team to provide suitable habitat for native bat species. In 2020, two new bat boxes were installed. The team monitors the boxes for signs of bat species and performs maintenance as needed.
  • The pollinator project targets gulf fritillary butterfly, monarch butterfly, fiery skipper, banded tussock moth, common gray moth, gorgone checkerspot, Palamedes swallowtail and red admiral. The team monitors the planted vegetation for pollinators throughout the season.
  • The team conducts cutting within 1,800 acres of invasive bamboo.
