The Vulcan Materials Company Lithonia Quarry site in Conyer, Georgia, includes a two-acre catfish pond and a seven-acre lake. Lithonia Quarry is home to many species, and conservation actions began in the early 2000s. The habitat is specifically managed and monitored eastern bluebirds and little brown bats. The work is championed by a single employee, who was responsible for building, repairing and monitoring the structures.
Practices and Impacts
- Thirteen eastern bluebird boxes were strategically installed on-site so that bluebirds have protected shelter and easy access to insects and water. Bluebird boxes were designed so that brown-headed cowbirds and European starlings are not able to enter. Four of the boxes continually produce two broods of bluebirds each year.
- The team has installed bat boxes and monitors for the presence of little brown bats. They have observed bat activity in one of their boxes. Observations indicate about five bats utilizing this box.
