About the Program
CEMEX’s Brooksville South Cement Plant supplies cement for projects of all sizes throughout the Tampa-St. Petersburg Metropolitan area. Located in Hernando County, the site includes a cement plant, aggregate quarry and ready-mix facility. The conservation education objectives are for learners to learn about mining reclamation and to identify the attributes of a littoral shelf and the importance of this habitat to the environment.

Practices and Impacts
  • The on-site habitat is used to inform the education project including in-habitat activities, where Scouts toured the reclamation site, including the littoral shelf area. Learners are engaged in this project once a year. The project provides value to the community by identifying a community need: badge/patch requirements for troops and awareness of local environmental issues.
  • Learning was measured pre-assessment and post-assessment. On the pre-assessment, the average score was 62% correct, and on the post-assessment, the average score was 83%. The 21-point increase shows evidence of improvement in learner knowledge.
