About the Program
The Sanders Quarry, operated by Vulcan Materials Company, is located alongside Turkey Run, a small tributary of the Potomac River in northern Virginia. The quarry features 2.5 acres of wildlife food and cover plots that help support youth education both on-site and at local schools. Vulcan Materials Company strives to be an environmentally responsible member of the community by making wildlife habitat compatible with their site operations and by fostering youth and community education.
Practices and Impacts
- There are two cover plots on site — one with a supplemental food mixture and the other planted with native grasses and wildflowers. These food plots attract a variety of wildlife including deer, honeybees, rabbits, turtle, coyotes, turkeys, bald eagles and blue heron.
- In 2019, the team added a landscaped pollinator garden that provides forage for a range of native pollinators.
